I plan on installing a play set in my back yard, and I am not sure what kind of yard prep is needed?

Is it better to just leave the grass and place the play structure on top, having the mow around the structure? or lay mulch on top of the grass? or remove the grass and level the ground then lay mulch, if I go with the later how do I go about removing grass and leveling the ground?

I’d square off the area first. Then I would spray something on the grass to kill it, before placing landscaping plastic over it. Next, put down the rubberized red mulch that is used on school playgrounds, etc. That way, you don’t have to mow around the play set & your children will have a safe surface beneath them to play on. That’s what really matters. I’m sure the directions on the back of the “rubberized mulch” will give you directions for prep work prior to putting that special mulch down. I saw that rubberized mulch at Lowe’s but I’m sure you can find it at Home Depot, or other places as well.

well that depends on personal taste. do you like your grass? i recently put in a playset in my own back yard. we left the grass and found that it was getting torn up. also our soil around here is hard and clay like. so it was a hard fall for the kids. now we have some straw covered with bark chips. softer.
as for leveling we did not do it. we have a lumpy yard and just dug down where needs for the supports to be all level.
you can purchase a weed/ grass killer that lasts all season long.
also you can ussually rent a water filled rolling device from your local hardware store. you wet your yard well then use the roller to flaten the area as needed . (?) that might work. also the local hardware may have a few ideas to offer also.
